History

The Queens Park area is steeped in history which adds to the character of the area.

Queens Park situated next to the hotel was designed by Sir John Paxton and dedicated to Mary Queen of Scots. The grounds within the park are the location of the infamous Battle of Langside 13th May 1568, notably the most momentous battle to take place within the Glasgow area. The battlefield memorial just outside the park marks this clash of forces between Mary Queen of Scots and the Regent Moray. The outcome of this battle significantly caused Mary Queen of Scots to flee Scotland never to return.

The area also has many notable historic public buildings such as Charles Rennie Mackintosh's Scotland Street School Museum and House for an Art Lover; the world famous Burrell Collection in Pollok Country Park and Alexander 'Greek' Thomson's Holmwood House villa.

Nearby the hotel is The Tramway Theatre which in the early years of the 20th century served as the city's main tram terminus. As with most areas in Glasgow trams were used to get around the city. Queens Drive where the hotel is situated used to have a tram line which sadly was removed.
